Orchids are basically available in two types. The first type of orchid which grows in trees, rocks and poles is known as epiphytes. The most popular type grows in ground and is known as terrestrial orchids. Still we may come across several other species and hybrids of orchids in various other colors, sizes, etc.

Discussing about epiphyte, this term is not just associated with the orchid plants, so, any plant that has root system above the ground falls under this type. Epiphytes are more popular than terrestrial orchids and almost 75% of orchid plants are epiphytes type. Phaleanopsis and Denrobiums are the most popular epiphytes.

Any plant that has root system above ground could be described as epiphyte. This term is not limited to orchid plants only. These types of orchid plants are more popular and almost 75% of orchid plants are epiphytes type. Very famous Phaleanopsis is popular epiphyte. These orchids are easy to grow and have long-lasting flowers. They are often seen at weddings and can be found in various colors including pinks, yellows, and even stripes. Epiphytes grow primarily in the tropical regions of the world and can survive high sunlight and needs more water. They could easily grow but at the same time needs slightly more care than terrestrial and do not flower regular basis. Dendrobiums are best known epiphytes orchid.

Epiphytes have strong association with the trees. They grow upon trees. However they do not take nourishment from the tree. They stick to the fleshy roots, branches or bark of the tree. They get nutrients from the organic matter that accumulates between the roots and the branches of the tree. The roots of epiphytic orchids have capability to survive in wet and dry periods as they have tough, stringy core surrounded by a spongy off-white covering which absorbs water completely during rains also. It turns light green when completely saturated. The mechanism says that the orchid's roots retain moisture and gradually release it to the plant tissues. Some species of the epiphytic orchids cling to the rocks also. Epiphytes enjoy in open and filtered light when suspended from trees or rocks.

Now let us gain knowledge about terrestrial orchids. Cymbidium and Calopogon are some well-known species of the terrestrial orchids. They are found in countries like Japan, Australia and parts of Southeast Asia. Some facts about terrestrial orchids are as follows:  They have roots that can grow on land just like other plants or can have aerial roots.  They are dependent on fungi for their existence. Most orchids die because the environment may not have fungi.  Cymbidium is the best choice of the beginners because they are easy to grow and their proper care yields beautiful flowers every year.
